Enter the Trigram, part two

This was part one.

Today I planted early spring vegetable seeds: onions, turnips, radishes, arugula, spinach, mizuna, and peas. The other accomplishment was completing the first row cover (to protect those seeds).

You can follow the links for each photo to get all of the details. The short version is that I built three 2'x2'x1.5' wooden frames using 39-cent dowel rods. The bed that the frames span is 2'x10'.

I bought a 10'x20', 1-mil plastic drop cloth for $2.99. I cut that to 10'x14', folded it to 5'x14', and then wrapped it over the frames. The plastic was cut to 14' so that we could fold down the plastic at the ends of the bed. The plastic was secured with elongated, U-shaped sections of wire hangers that were pushed into the soil (sort of like sabertoothed staples). A few stones were deposited on the tied-off corners.

Even before I was finished securing the sides, and with a breeze still blowing in, I could see condensation inside the cover. That bodes well for the below-freezing temperatures we'll have in coming days.

The next round of planting, which I'll plan for the week between April 2 and April 9, will consist of broccoli, carrots, beets, lettuce, some more peas perhaps, and kale.

If I'm able to get the exterior beds dug (I've only cut the edges so far), then I might plant some calendula and flax along the sides.
