Meijer wins again with organics
I stopped by a gardening store in Geneva this morning to buy some stevia plants. My last seedling had withered the day before, and I sent my extra stevia seeds to a friend in Ohio in March.
I planned to put many of my herb starts in today or tomorrow, which is why I didn't just order more seeds.
I had seen stevia plants priced around $3.50 at the Home Depot and Lowe's stores near the house, but I assumed that those plants were conventionally grown. I figured that this other place would have organically grown herbs, if not those particular seeds.
Surprisingly, they didn't have stevia seeds. The prices for the herbs were $3.69 and I couldn't get past the fact that I'd be spending more than seven dollars for two plants when I could buy a seed packet for $2.50.
So I put the plants down and left. I stopped by a nearby Meijer on the way home, thinking, "Well, I'll just get them here, whether they're organic or not."
Lo and behold, Meijer had shelf upon shelf of organic herbs, and they were all discounted to $2.09.
So, once again, Meijer's organic inventory came in below the cost for certain conventional products.
